Grand Magal

In September 2022, I attended the Grand Magal of Touba, the most important religious festival of the Mouride brotherhood in Senegal.

It commemorates the exile of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba, the brotherhood's founder, in 1895. Since 1928, this event has drawn millions of pilgrims to Touba from across Senegal and neighboring countries.

I had the unique opportunity to spend a week at the house of a marabout, where about 30 "talibés" (disciples) were staying. This "huis clos" immersion offered me a more personal view of the Grand Magal, revealing the daily rhythm of life among the pilgrims. From spiritual discussions on the concrete rooftop to communal prayers and shared meals, I gained insights into the profound devotion that characterizes this festival.

Staying within one of the marabout's many residences in Touba allowed me to witness firsthand the dedication and camaraderie among the faithful. These experiences highlighted the rich traditions and spiritual significance that make the Grand Magal a central event in the lives of millions of Mourides each year.
